Saint Matthew Parish issued the following announcement on Feb. 7.
Dan is a strong, athletic young man. He spends much of his weekend time with friends in seasonal outdoor activities: hiking and camping in the summer and skiing in the winter. While he finds the activity and friendships enjoyable and refreshing, Dan feels the need to be a good steward of the physical ability he has been given, so he also participates in long-distance bicycle rides for local charities. In his words: “God has given me a body that is capable of much. It seems I should use it to help others when I can.”
Dan’s stewarding does not stop there, however. He has convinced his friends to join him. At first, their participation was only due to his encouragement and sometimes his chiding. Now, each has selected a particular ride in which to participate and act as organizer for their group. They study the charitable causes being addressed through the rides, choosing the ones to which they feel a strong commitment. They raise money and awareness. The rides have become an important, sometimes exhausting, yet always satisfying, focus for a good portion of their summertime. Through their active stewardship of their abilities, these young adults are helping others, and in doing so they give glory to God as the giver of such great gifts.
