Saint Matthew Parish issued the following announcement on July 19.
Carolina was a baby when her parents moved to the town that became her home. They knew no one, had little worldly possessions, and had placed all their hopes for their family in the move that took them to their new location more than 18 years ago. What her parents had in abundance was faith: faith in God’s providential care, faith that all would be well, faith which they shared in words and actions with Carolina and her brother, Eduardo.
Now, Carolina prepared to move to a new city, to begin college studies, but not without a sense of gratitude for the seeds of faith, which her parents had nurtured throughout her childhood and teen years. She realized that it had taken much careful planning to make sure she and Eduardo participated in religious education at their parish. They celebrated special feasts at home, and marked sacramental moments with great appreciation.
As a young adult, Carolina understands now that there were surely moments when her parents wondered if they were making the right choices for her family, but they always taught their children to hold firm in trust that God will provide. Once settled into their new life, they had been quick to find ways to reach out to those whose livelihood was less certain.
She had learned from her parents that there is always something for which to be grateful, and that giving to others is the appropriate response to the compassion and care people so freely shared with them. Carolina’s parents are good stewards of the responsibility of raising their children, tending and nurturing the good soil of faith, which is still their most precious gift.
