Saint Matthew Parish issued the following announcement on Nov. 8.
Diane and her friend, Barbara, have taken a weekend retreat together for over 20 years. It started after they graduated from college, as a way to stay connected. At times, they participate in a retreat being given at a center not far from where Diane lives. Other years, they go to a quiet place where they may participate in Mass at a local parish, spend time in prayer and meet with the local pastor to seek guidance. This year, the pastor asked what seemed a simple question: “What situation in your life requires you to persevere in faith?” Diane did not find the question easy to answer, however. To be honest, she had not thought about this, yet the moment the question was asked, she was struck by how many responses seemed to fit: the situation with co-workers who mock her involvement in her parish; her adult son who rarely speaks of church or faith, who seems to be drifting away from all she holds dear; the many times newspaper articles or reports on television seem to attack closely held beliefs; the strength she knows she needs in order to trust in God as she shares of herself and her resources.
Diane knew the question was asked in order to prompt reflection and conversation. She talked with Barbara about the things that came to mind, and Barbara added her own list of challenges to living as a Christian in the world today. As they were packing and preparing to return home for another year, Barbara commented: “It is good for us to step away and take stock of our lives, and especially that we do this together! No matter how tough life becomes, we always have each other. That is a sign for me of Christ’s love, and it gives me strength.”
