Gov. Josh Shapiro has unveiled his state budget proposal for the 2024-25 fiscal year, presenting it to a joint session of the General Assembly. The proposed budget totals $48.3 billion, marking an increase of $3.7 billion or 8.4% over the current fiscal year.
Rep. Jack Rader from Monroe County responded to the governor’s plan with some reservations about its financial implications. “Some of the new spending proposed by the governor is worth considering,” he stated, adding that “state government can’t pay for everything for everyone.” He emphasized his belief in finding long-term solutions that are financially sustainable.
Rader expressed concern over Gov. Shapiro’s intention to use surplus funds built up in recent years to balance this spending plan, without addressing the existing structural deficit. He warned that such actions could lead to significant tax increases in future years, affecting all residents.
He reminded stakeholders that “the governor’s address is just the beginning of the annual budget process” and expressed his intent to collaborate with colleagues across party lines to develop a balanced budget that does not further burden taxpayers.
The House Appropriations Committee will begin hearings on Tuesday, Feb. 20, to scrutinize details of the governor’s proposal and evaluate departmental spending. The General Assembly and Gov. Shapiro have until June 30 to finalize their budget agreement.
